Dry Needling

Instantly resolve muscle spasms and stubborn pains with needle-point precision.

Dry Needling is a western medicine-based clinical treatment method where painful trigger points (commonly known as 'muscle knots') formed in the muscles are mechanically resolved with very fine, sterile filament needles. Without using medication, cortisone, or any chemical substance, the center of the pain is reached entirely by using the physiological reflex mechanism of the muscle. In our Wellness Studio clinic in Pendik, Istanbul, it is applied with high precision by expert physiotherapists with full anatomical knowledge.

Muscle spasms, seen in a wide spectrum from people constantly working at a desk to heavily training athletes, disrupt blood flow to the muscle over time, causing the accumulation of acidic waste in that area and the chronification of pain. Superficial massage or heat applications cannot reach these deep spasms. Dry needling, however, reaches the target muscle directly with the help of fine needles, allowing the knot inside the muscle to be resolved in milliseconds with a 'twitch' response.

For our clients coming from Kadıköy, Maltepe, Kartal, Ümraniye, and Tuzla with complaints of neck stiffness, fibromyalgia, or severe muscle pain due to a herniated disc, dry needling treatment is generally integrated with manual therapy or clinical exercise programs and offered as part of a permanent healing protocol.

Who is this service for?

  • Those with stiffness known as 'muscle knots' (trigger points) around the neck, back, and shoulder blade
  • Those diagnosed with Myofascial Pain Syndrome and Fibromyalgia, suffering from widespread muscle pain
  • Those experiencing severe muscle spasms and stiffness due to cervical or lumbar disc herniation
  • Those with tissue damage due to overuse, such as Tennis/Golfer's elbow, Achilles tendinitis
  • People with facial, head, and neck pain due to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders
  • Athletes who develop shortening and loss of function in their muscles after sports injuries
  • Those suffering from postural disorders and tension-type headaches due to staying at a computer for long periods
  • Those with deep tissue stiffness that cannot be resolved with classic massage or heat applications

How is it applied?

01

Trigger Point Detection

Our physiotherapist performs detailed manual palpation (manual examination) to detect the tense bands and trigger points causing pain in the muscle with millimeter precision.

02

Sterile Needling

After the area is sterilized, medication-free (dry), sterile filament needles as thin as a strand of hair, similar to acupuncture needles, are inserted directly into the detected spasm knot.

03

Local Twitch Response

When the needle reaches the spasmed muscle, the muscle gives a reflex contraction-relaxation (twitch) response that lasts less than a second. This small jump is the clearest indicator that the therapeutic effect has been successfully achieved.

04

Biochemical Wash

After the twitch response, acidic wastes and inflammatory substances trapped in the tissue due to the spasm are cleaned (washed) away by fresh blood rushing to the area.

05

Stretching and Integration

After the needles are removed, specific stretching exercises and light massage techniques are applied so that the resolved muscle fibers adapt to their new, lengthened position.

Benefits of Dry Needling

Mechanical resolution of stubborn muscle spasms (knots) in deep tissues within seconds
Ensuring a rush of fresh blood carrying oxygen and nutrients to tissues where blood flow was blocked
Immediate increase in joint range of motion as muscle length normalizes
Greatly eliminating the need for continuous use of painkillers (muscle relaxants)
Reduction of numbness and tingling by relieving tension in muscles pressing on nerve roots
The treatment is completely natural; no chemical drugs or cortisone are administered to the body
Dramatically accelerating the recovery process in athletes and active individuals
Its effect is much deeper, more direct, and more permanent compared to local massages

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Dry Needling the same thing as Acupuncture?
No, although the same needles are used, their philosophies and goals are completely different. Acupuncture aims to open blockages in 'energy meridians' (Qi) according to Traditional Chinese Medicine principles. Dry needling, however, is a clinical application based entirely on western medicine anatomy and neurophysiology, providing the direct mechanical resolution of the problematic muscle (trigger point).
Will I feel pain during the procedure?
Because the needles are as thin as a strand of hair, the moment of entry into the skin is generally not felt. When the needle reaches the spasmed area, a momentary ache or feeling of heaviness may occur instantly with the muscle's reflex 'jump' (twitch). This is a tolerable feeling, described by patients as a 'sweet pain', indicating that the treatment is working.
Is there medication inside the needles used?
No. This is why the treatment is called 'dry'. No painkillers, muscle relaxants, or cortisone are injected into the body through the needles. Healing is provided by the mechanical stimulus created by the needle triggering the body's own reflex repair mechanisms.
What should I pay attention to after the procedure?
It is very normal to experience a slight feeling of muscle soreness in the area after the procedure, which can last for 1-2 days, as if you had done a heavy workout. To accelerate this process, it is recommended to drink plenty of water, keep the area warm, and do the light stretching exercises our expert will show you.
In how many sessions can I get results?
While even a single session can provide complete relief for acute (newly formed) muscle stiffness, an average of 3 to 5 sessions are planned for chronic and widespread pain. From the very first session, an increase in range of motion and a significant reduction in pain are felt.
